What Leads to Hormone Imbalance

There are many benefits of meditation for hormone health, but let’s look at some of the common culprits leading to hormone imbalance in the first place.

Hormone levels change as you progress through life. When you’re young, active and not so concerned with things that don’t directly affect you, your hormones are strong and doing their job, keeping your body functioning at peak performance. As time goes by, all the problems of the world begin to impinge on you more. There are many things that lead to hormone imbalance, and here are just a few.

  • Stress
  • Aging
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Not enough sleep

Cortisol and Stress

Stress is among the top causes of hormonal imbalance. Your body produces a hormone called cortisol, also known as the “stress hormone”. When your body and mind are functioning normally, cortisol helps with inflammation, energy levels and sugar conversion. As stress levels rise, so does the amount of cortisol in your body. If cortisol levels remain elevated for too long, this can wreak havoc on the body. Inflammation rises, healing slows down, digestion and sleep is affected, your state of mind declines and the immune system weakens. In other words, it’s a long, downhill ride for your health.

When the mind is relaxed, the production of cortisol decreases – as much as 50% or more!

There is a simple way to get your body and hormones back in balance.

Meditation and Hormone Balance

DHEA

Your body produces DHEA, a natural anti-aging hormone also known as the “longevity molecule”. DHEA helps to counteract the negative effects of cortisol and is a foundation for hormone production.

DHEA responds amazingly well to meditation. With meditation, an individual can increase their DHEA production by more than 40%. The higher the DHEA level, the lower the mortality rate.

Endorphins

Endorphins are the body’s internal pain killers. They also help to relieve stress and chronic pain. An endorphin rush feels bliss-like, euphoric. Although physical exertion, such as running, increases endorphins, meditation also raises endorphin levels.

Serotonin

Serotonin, the “feel good” hormone, also increases with meditation. There are chemicals that bathe the brain neurons and protect them from the stress that lowers serotonin levels. Meditation triggers these chemicals to protect your neurons and thus keep serotonin at normal levels. And this leads to happier moods.

GABA

GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) is a chemical that helps you feel calm. When the body is low on GABA you may be nervous, anxious or perhaps have insomnia. With one hour of meditation GABA can increase over 25%. Just imagine feeling 25% calmer in just one hour.

Something as simple as meditation has a profound effect on the body’s hormone levels.
